Metallic green head, coppery wings, and five white tufts along each side. They skeletonize leaves in groups, in daylight, from late June. Don't buy a trap: two extension services find traps pull in more beetles than they catch. Knock them into soapy water in the early morning instead.
Is it Japanese beetles?
Look for a stocky beetle about a third to half an inch long, with a metallic green head and coppery-brown wing covers. Handsome, if you can be objective about it, which you cannot.
If the damage is small round holes rather than lace, you are probably looking at flea beetles instead. The giveaway is the fringe. Five little tufts of white hair along each side of the body, where the wing covers stop. Other beetles are green, other beetles are coppery. The white tufts are the one that settles it.
The damage is as distinctive as the insect. They eat the leaf tissue between the veins and leave the veins standing, so the leaf ends up as a lacy skeleton of itself, which then browns and drops. And they do it in groups, in daylight, out in the open — you will not have to hunt for them.
Why the trap makes it worse
This is the part worth the page, and it is not a close call. Two extension services say it separately, in their own words.
University of Minnesota Extension: "Don't use Japanese beetle traps. Hanging a trap in a home garden is not an effective way to protect plants." The reason, in their words: "While these traps can collect an impressive number of beetles, research at the University of Kentucky has demonstrated that more beetles fly toward the traps than are caught." And the consequence: "This usually results in more damage to nearby gardens and landscape plants than if no traps were present."
Colorado State University Extension, independently: "Japanese beetle traps are not recommended for Japanese beetle control." Their phrasing of the mechanism: "the use of Japanese beetle traps often increases damage by Japanese beetles by drawing into the vicinity larger numbers of beetles than are captured in the traps."
Now the honest half, because it is why nobody believes this. The traps work spectacularly at catching beetles. A bag fills in a day. You look at it and think, that is a day's worth of beetles that were not on my roses. That evidence is real and it is right in front of you — and it is exactly the wrong evidence, because you cannot see the ones the lure called in from three gardens away and who then landed on something on the way.
So where should you put the trap?
If you already own one, this is the question you actually have, and it has a real answer.
The serious trapping research is agricultural. University of Missouri's mass-trapping work is on commercial orchards of half an acre to two and a half acres, and its instruction is a perimeter: "place traps along the entire perimeter—like a fence—around the crop you wish to protect. Traps are meant to be a barrier to intercept beetles before they land on crops."
And even there it warns: "do not place traps in the center of the field because that will make things worse." A garden is not half an acre and it does not have a perimeter you can fence with traps. One trap in a back garden is, by definition, in the middle of the thing you are protecting — the placement the pro-trapping research tells commercial growers to avoid.
So: far away from anything you care about, if you must, and understand you are running a beetle magnet in your neighborhood. Or take it down.
What to do instead
Knock them into soapy water, in the early morning. Colorado State: hand picking "can sometimes be effective in small plantings", and the beetles can be shaken off the plant "in the early morning, when temperatures are cool". Minnesota says the same: "Handpick or knock the beetles into a bucket of soapy water to kill them."
The cool part is the whole trick, and there are two windows a day. Minnesota: "The best time to remove Japanese beetles is in the evening or in the morning when beetles on the plants are still cool and sluggish." In the afternoon they fly off as your hand approaches; at seven in the morning, or at dusk, they drop straight into the bucket. Same job, completely different success rate, and it costs you nothing but the timing.
Minnesota is direct about when this is the right tool: "Physically removing beetles can be a practical and effective management practice for smaller landscapes or a few plants, especially when only small numbers of Japanese beetles are present." A garden is a smaller landscape. This is the tool for it.
And removing them is not just subtraction. Minnesota: "Remember, beetle-damaged leaves emit airborne chemicals that attract more beetles. By physically removing them, you'll reduce the number of new beetles attracted to your plants." That is the same mechanism running in your favor for once — chewed leaves call more beetles in, so every one you take out this morning is a few that never get the invitation. Check daily.
And if you are reaching for a spray anyway, the spider mite page is worth two minutes first — the same reflex causes outbreaks there. We are not going to name a spray. Japanese beetle guidance varies by state, and a product name from us would be a number we had not checked for where you live. Your extension service publishes it.
What they go for in your garden
Minnesota's preferred list is long and it reads like a tour of the good bits: "rose, grape, linden, apple, crabapple, cherry, plum and related trees, birch, elm, raspberry, currant, basil, Virginia creeper, hollyhock, marigold, corn silks and soybean."

When they show up
Colorado State puts the season plainly: adults "may begin to emerge from the soil in early June and are usually most abundant in early summer – from late June through early August."
So the window you are managing is about six weeks. That is short enough that morning hand-picking is a real strategy rather than a chore without end, and it is the reason a trap left up all summer keeps calling beetles in long after the plants would have stopped being interesting.

How do I get rid of Japanese beetles permanently?
You do not, and anyone promising it is selling something. They fly in from elsewhere, so a garden cleared today can be repopulated tomorrow. What you can do is manage the six weeks they are active: knock them into soapy water each morning, and do not run a trap that calls more of them toward you.
Where is the best place to put a Japanese beetle trap?
Far from anything you value, or nowhere at all. Minnesota says do not use one in a home garden. The agricultural research that does use traps rings a whole field's perimeter and warns against placing them in the center of the crop — which is exactly where a single garden trap ends up.
Do Japanese beetle traps work?
They catch beetles superbly and protect plants badly. Minnesota cites Kentucky research finding more beetles fly toward the traps than are caught, and Colorado State finds traps often increase damage by drawing in more than they capture. The full bag is real. It is just not the number that matters.
