GardenTerms of use
Using GardenTrack means agreeing to these. The short version: it is free, it is early, your garden records are yours, our plant data is yours to reuse with credit, and nothing here is a substitute for an expert when a plant or a meal actually matters.
What GardenTrack is
A website of gardening reference and tools, and an app that keeps a record of your garden and tells you what to do and when. These terms cover both, and cover using them at all — reading the site included.
It is an early version. We are building it in the open, and things change, break and get rewritten. Nothing here promises a feature will exist tomorrow in the shape it has today.
It costs nothing
There is no charge, no subscription and no card. If that changes, a paid thing will be an obvious choice you make rather than something that quietly starts, and what you already have will not be taken away to sell back to you.
Your account, and using it sensibly
Sign-in is a code sent to your email; keep access to that inbox and you keep access to your garden. One account is meant for one gardener.
Do not use GardenTrack to break the law, to attack the service or the people using it, to scrape it in ways that degrade it for everybody else, or to pass off our written work as your own. We can close an account that is doing those things.
Your garden is yours
What you record — your plants, your journal, your photographs — belongs to you. You give us permission to store it and to process it in order to run the product for you: to work out your dates, to answer the questions you ask, and to sync it between your devices. That is the whole of the permission, and the privacy page says exactly who else touches it.
We do not use your garden or your photographs to train models, and we do not sell them. You can clear your garden yourself, and ask us to delete the account entirely — how that works.
Gardening advice has limits, and this is the part worth reading
Our planting dates, spacings and growing guidance are drawn from published sources — mostly university extension services — and where we do not have a source we say so instead of guessing. It is genuinely researched. It is still general information, and your garden is a specific place we cannot see.
Identification and diagnosis from a photograph are informed guesses. They can be wrong, and confidently so. Three things follow, and we mean them:
- Never eat anything on the strength of our identification. Not a berry, not a mushroom, not a leaf, not a plant you believe is a herb. Misidentification of a foraged plant can kill you, and no software should be the last word between you and that.
- Where a plant is valuable or a problem is spreading, ask a person. Your state's extension service will look at a sample — usually free — and they are the same people our pages cite.
- Follow the label, not us, on any product you apply. Where we name a treatment we name the active ingredient; the label on the bottle carries the legal rates, the protective equipment and the interval before harvest, and it beats anything we say.
Weather-related warnings — frost alerts and the like — depend on forecasts and on your phone actually receiving them. Do not let a quiet phone be your evidence that a frost is not coming.
What you can do with our work
The plant database is yours to reuse. Every crop and variety we publish is free under CC BY 4.0 — commercially, redistributed, built upon — and crediting us is the whole license. Download it here.
The written pages are not. Guides, articles, tools and images on this site stay ours. Quote us with a link, as you would anyone. Do not republish them wholesale or feed them through a rewriter and publish the result.
No warranty, and what we are responsible for
GardenTrack is provided as it is, without warranty. We do not promise it will be available, correct or uninterrupted, and a free early product is exactly the thing you should not build an irreplaceable record on without a backup.
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for lost plants, lost harvests, lost records or lost time arising from using it. Where the law does not allow us to exclude something, we do not attempt to.
Ending it
Stop whenever you like — nothing renews and nothing chases you. We can suspend or close an account that is breaking these terms, and if we ever shut the service down we will say so with enough notice to get your garden out.
Changes
If these terms change, this page changes and the date below moves. A change that materially affects you gets said out loud in the updates log rather than slipped in.
