Walking your garden

Partly live · Photos still have to be taken one at a time and tagged to a plant as you go — there is no way to shoot ten first and sort them afterwards.

A garden walk lets you photograph up to ten things as you walk round, tapping which plant each one is. Every picture is looked at and what we notice is written into that plant's record. Start it from the top of your garden screen, or from the + button in the bottom bar. On the free plan you get one walk, ever; it does not come out of your photo allowance.

What it is for

You are already walking round your garden looking at things. The walk is that, with a record at the end of it.

Open it from your garden screen, photograph whatever catches your eye, and tap which plant it is. That is the whole interaction. Each picture is looked at as you go, and what we notice lands on that plant.

What you see while it works

Each photo appears in a list underneath the camera button as you take it, and updates itself when the look comes back:

  • Nothing wrong with it. We examined it and there is nothing worth writing down.
  • 2 things noted. We saw something, and it is on the plant’s record.
  • Looking… on its way.
  • Saved — we will look when you have signal. No connection. The photo is safe.
  • We cannot reach our end just now. Our server, not your phone. Also safe, also looked at later.
  • Nobody looked at this one. Saved, not examined — and it names who did not do it rather than leaving you to work it out from a “not”.

What it is not

It does not diagnose. If something looks wrong and you want a proper answer, ask about that photo directly — that is a different screen and a different kind of answer.

It does not sort photos for you afterwards. Which plant each one is gets asked while you are standing in front of it, because that is when you know.

Common questions

Where do I start a garden walk?
**Two places, and either one does the same thing.** **At the top of your garden screen**, above your beds — a purple button reading *Walk your garden*. It is purple where the others are orange on purpose: orange is for doing something to a bed, and a walk is somewhere you go. **Or behind the + in the bottom bar**, above the list of plants. That one is there for a reason rather than for symmetry: **a walk is logging.** You are going outside to record what you see, and the + is where your hand already goes to record something. **Neither appears until you have a plant.** A walk photographs your plants and writes what it finds into their records, so with an empty garden it would be an invitation to a dead end — add a plant first and both doors appear. ⚠ **It used to be one line of small gray text on the garden screen**, which worked and which nobody could find. Fixed 25 August 2026.
How many photos can one walk have?
**Ten.** The screen counts them for you and stops offering the camera when you get there. If you have less room left for photos than that, it says the smaller number at the top before you start — *"photograph up to 4 things"* — rather than letting you take ten and losing six of them. That is the whole reason the number is checked before the camera opens rather than after the fifth picture.
How many garden walks do I get?
**On the free plan, one — ever.** It is a one-time thing and it does not come back. **It does not come out of your ten free photo answers.** A walk has its own allowance, so using it does not cost you any of the questions or photo answers you were given when you signed up. That was a deliberate decision — a walk that quietly ate half your lifetime photo allowance would be a worse deal than no walk at all.
What if I lose signal halfway through?
**Keep walking.** Every photo is saved on your phone the moment you take it, and we look at them when you have signal again — the screen says so rather than pretending something failed. You do not have to leave the app open or remember to come back. And if your phone dies mid-walk, opening the screen again picks up the same walk rather than starting a new one, so you do not lose the rest of a walk you already started.
One of my photos says "nobody looked at this one". What does that mean?
**Exactly what it says: the picture is saved, and nobody examined it.** It is in your garden record like any other photo. It just did not get a look. It happens when the walk ran out — you had already used your one free walk, or the walk was full at ten. **We mark those rather than leaving you to guess**, because a record where some entries were examined and some were not, with nothing saying which, is worse than one that admits it.
A photo says "nothing wrong with it". Did it work?
**Yes, and that is the commonest answer.** It means we examined the picture and there is nothing there worth writing down — your plant looks like a plant. We say it in words that share nothing with *"nobody looked at this one"* on purpose. One means the plant is fine; the other means nobody checked, and those are not the same news. **They used to both contain the phrase "looked at", which meant the whole difference rested on the word "not"** — three unstressed letters carrying the one thing that costs you something, because on the free plan you cannot walk again to find out.
Why does it ask which plant each photo is? Can it not tell?
**Because knowing which plant it is, is what makes the photo worth anything to you later.** A picture filed against the right plant joins that plant's record, so next month you can see how it changed. A picture filed against the wrong one puts a note about your beans on your tomato — and nothing about the record looks wrong afterwards, which is the worst kind of mistake to make in a journal. One tap while you are standing in front of the plant is cheaper and more reliable than a guess made later from a photo. If it is not one of yours, you can keep the picture without putting it on a plant.
Does this replace asking about a photo?
**No, and they answer different questions.** Asking about a photo is for *"what is wrong with this?"* — one plant, one worry, a proper answer you read. A walk is for *"here is my garden, note anything"*. It writes what it sees into your record and does not interrupt you. You go round, it takes notes. Nothing to read at the time, and it is there when you want it.
