A seedling that looked fine yesterday is lying flat, pinched to a thread right at the soil line. That is damping off, and it cannot be treated — the ones that fell are gone. Everything that works happens before and just after sowing: clean medium, warmth to get them through the vulnerable stage fast, and do not overwater.
What it looks like, and why it is unmistakable
Wisconsin describes it exactly as it happens: seedlings "initially are healthy but shortly after emergence become infected at or just below the soil line. The lower stems of the seedlings collapse, and the seedlings fall over onto the soil surface."
The tell is where the damage is and how narrow it is. The stem is pinched to a thread right at the soil line, while the leaves above are often still green and perfectly healthy-looking. The plant has not wilted from the top down and it has not been chewed — it has been cut through at one point and fallen at that point.
The timing is the other half. This happens to new seedlings, days after they come up. A three-week-old plant flopping over is a different problem.
Several different organisms, one name — and this time it does not matter
Wisconsin: "Damping-off is caused by several soil-borne water molds and fungi, including (but not limited to) Pythium spp., Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium spp."
That is three genera and an explicit "not limited to", so "damping off" is a symptom with several unrelated causes rather than one disease. On most pages in this section that distinction changes what you should do — a fusarium wilt is locked to one crop, a cucurbit downy mildew is a different organism from basil's and looks different too.
Here it changes nothing, and that is worth saying plainly rather than leaving a reader to wonder. You cannot treat any of them, the conditions that favor them are the same, and the prevention is identical. So unlike almost every other diagnosis, there is no value in narrowing it down — which is a genuine relief, because narrowing it down would need a laboratory.
There is no cure, and that reframes the whole problem
The seedlings lying on the compost are dead. Nothing brings back a stem that has rotted through, and there is no rescue treatment to apply to the survivors that will do more than the conditions already will.
So every useful thing on this page happens before the problem appears, which is unusual and is why most advice about it feels unsatisfying. You are not looking for a treatment. You are looking at next week's sowing.
Wisconsin's guidance is entirely preventive, and the ordering tells you what matters: a "well-drained, pasteurized potting mixture", clean equipment, warmth, and "DO NOT overwater as damping-off organisms are more active in wet soils." Fungicide-treated seed appears last and as an option — "consider using fungicide-treated seed" — not as the answer.
The strategy is speed
The single most useful line in Wisconsin's guidance is one most pages leave out, because it does not read like disease control. It reads like growing advice — and that is the point.

Why warmth is the surprising one
Heat mats get sold as a way to make seeds germinate sooner, and that is true and it is not the interesting part. Wisconsin frames warmth as a way to make the vulnerable stage SHORTER — the seedling is at risk for a certain period after it emerges, and a fast-growing seedling spends fewer days in that period. It is the same logic as getting a transplant established quickly. The disease has a window, and you are trying to be past it.
How to sow so this does not happen
All four steps are before or immediately after sowing. There is no step for after it goes wrong, because there is not one.
- Start with fresh, pasteurized seed-starting mix. Not garden soil, and not the mix left in last year's trays. The organisms survive in soil and on equipment, so reusing either is starting the season with them already present. Wash trays and pots if you reuse them.
- Germinate somewhere warm. This is the step people treat as optional. Wisconsin's phrasing is that high germination temperatures let seedlings rapidly grow out of the vulnerable stage — so warmth is not about speed for its own sake, it is about spending fewer days at risk.
- Water sparingly, and from below if you can. Damping-off organisms are more active in wet soils, so consistently soggy compost is the condition they need. Let the surface dry slightly between waterings. Bottom-watering keeps the stems and the surface drier than watering over the top.
- Give them air and space. Thin crowded seedlings early. Crowding keeps humidity high around the stems and makes it easy for the problem to move along a row, and thinning is easier before the seedlings are worth losing.
If it has already happened, do not re-sow into the same compost. Empty the tray, wash it, and start again with fresh mix — the organisms are still in there and the next sowing meets the same conditions.
One thing this page will not tell you is which organism you have. Wisconsin names three genera and says the list is not limited to them, and telling them apart is laboratory work. Since the prevention is the same for all of them, it would not change anything you do.
What our source does and does not cover
Wisconsin's page opens by saying damping off "affects all types of plant seedlings", which is unusually broad and means it genuinely covers all 25 crops we attach this problem to. That is worth stating because it is not the norm — several problems in this section are held against far more crops than their sources address, and we have been saying so on those pages.
One gap. The page describes seedlings collapsing after emergence, and does not address seeds that rot before they ever come up. Gardeners often use "damping off" for both, and a tray where nothing appeared at all may be seed rot, old seed, cold soil, or sowing depth — this page cannot separate those for you.
Questions about damping off
Can I save seedlings that have damped off?
No. The stem has rotted through at the soil line, so the seedlings lying on the compost are dead and nothing brings them back. There is also no rescue treatment for the ones still standing that beats simply improving the conditions — more air, less water, more warmth. Wisconsin's guidance is entirely preventive, which is the honest shape of this problem: everything useful happens before it appears.
What causes damping off?
Several unrelated organisms, not one. Wisconsin names Pythium species, Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium species, and says explicitly the list is 'not limited to' those. They live in soil and on used equipment. Unusually for a disease with several causes, it does not matter which one you have — none of them can be treated, they all like the same cool wet conditions, and the prevention is identical.
Does a heat mat actually help prevent damping off?
Yes, and for a reason that is more interesting than faster germination. Wisconsin's advice is to germinate seeds at high temperatures 'so that seedlings rapidly grow out of the stage' — the seedling is vulnerable for a period after it emerges, and a fast-growing seedling spends fewer days in that period. Warmth shortens the window rather than killing anything. It also helps because the disease is most prevalent in cool, wet soil, so warmth removes half of that pair.
Can I reuse the compost from a tray where seedlings damped off?
No. The organisms survive in soil and on equipment, so re-sowing into that mix puts the next batch straight back into the conditions that killed the first. Empty it, wash the tray, and start with fresh pasteurized seed-starting mix. The same applies to pots and tools — Wisconsin lists pathogen-free equipment alongside pasteurized medium, not as an afterthought to it.
