Blossom End Rot: It Is a Calcium Problem, and the Calcium Spray Cannot Fix It

The sunken brown patch on the bottom of the fruit is a calcium shortage in that fruit — but usually not in your soil. Calcium travels in water, so uneven watering starves the fruit while the soil is full. Clemson lists calcium spray as a myth: it cannot reach the fruit. Water evenly and mulch.

What you are looking at, and where

The position is the diagnosis. This appears on the blossom end — the bottom of the fruit, opposite the stem — and nowhere else.

NC State describes the progression: "The first symptoms on fruit are a slight water-soaked area on or near the blossom end of the fruit," which then "darkens and enlargens in a constantly widening circle as the fruit ripens." By the time most people notice it, the tissue is "dark, shrunken, and has a dry, leathery appearance."

That dry, leathery quality is worth holding on to. This is not a soft rot and not a fungus — nothing is eating the fruit. It is tissue that died while the fruit was still forming, and it is why the patch is flat or sunken rather than mushy.

It really is calcium — just not where everyone looks

The popular answer is "calcium deficiency", and the popular correction is "actually it is watering". Both are half right, and the precise version is more useful than either.

NC State: blossom end rot "is caused by a lack of calcium in the developing fruit." So the fruit genuinely is short of calcium. That part of the folk answer is correct.

What it does not follow is that your soil is short of calcium. Clemson: it "can occur even when calcium levels in the soil are adequate." The bottleneck is delivery, not supply — NC State again: "Calcium is a mobile nutrient and must move to developing fruit via transportation of water."

Calcium rides in the water column. When the soil dries out and the flow stops, the fruit stops receiving calcium even though the soil is full of it. A fast-growing fruit at the end of that queue is the first thing to go short, and the blossom end is the furthest point from the stem.

Why the spray on the shelf cannot work

Clemson publishes this as a named gardening myth — *Fix Blossom End Rot with Calcium Sprays* — and gives two separate mechanical reasons, either of which would be enough on its own.

One: "Calcium that is present in leaves is not able to move through the phloem into the fruit." Spray it on the foliage and it stays in the foliage. The plant has no route to move it where the problem is.

Two: "the skin of the fruit is not able to directly absorb foliar-applied calcium." So spraying the fruit itself does not work either. Both doors are shut.

That is an unusually clean thing for an extension service to say, and it is worth taking at face value: the product is not weak, or slow, or dependent on timing. There is no path from the bottle to the tissue that needs the calcium.

And the affected fruit will not recover. The dead tissue at the blossom end stays dead. Anything you do now is for the fruit that has not formed yet, which is the real reason a spray appears to work when the weather settles at the same time.

What actually changes the outcome

In rough order of how much difference it makes. Only the last one involves buying calcium, and only after a test says you need it.

The one thing not on this list

A calcium spray. It is the most-sold product for this problem and neither source recommends it — Clemson names it as a myth outright, with the mechanism. If a page recommends it to you without addressing the phloem and the fruit skin, it has not read the objection.

What to do

Four steps, and the second one is the money.

  1. Check where the patch is. Blossom end rot is on the bottom of the fruit, opposite the stem, and it is dry and leathery rather than soft. A soft, spreading rot somewhere else on the fruit is a different problem and this page will not help.
  2. Do not buy the calcium spray. Clemson lists it as a myth and gives two mechanisms: calcium in the leaves cannot move through the phloem into the fruit, and the fruit's skin cannot absorb foliar calcium. There is no route from the bottle to the tissue.
  3. Even out the watering, and mulch. This is the actual intervention. Aim for consistent moisture rather than a dry-then-drench cycle — a timer and drip line if you have them, mulch either way. Remember that excess moisture is a cause too, so the target is steady, not more.
  4. Test the soil before adding any calcium at all. If a test shows the soil genuinely is short, lime or gypsum is NC State's recommendation and it is worth doing. If it is not short — which is the common case — you have found out for the price of a test instead of a season.

Accept the fruit you are holding. The affected tissue does not recover, so everything on this list is for fruit that has not set yet. That is also why a spray gets the credit when two rainy weeks were the real change.

Early fruit on a young plant is the most likely to be hit, because it is growing fastest while the root system is smallest. A first truss with blossom end rot and a clean second one is a normal pattern, not a sign the problem is spreading.

Both routes are closed. Sprays get credit when the weather steadies at the same time, because the fruit that forms after the change is fine either way.

Is blossom end rot a calcium deficiency or a watering problem?

Both, in a specific order. The fruit genuinely is short of calcium — NC State says it 'is caused by a lack of calcium in the developing fruit'. But your soil usually is not: Clemson notes it 'can occur even when calcium levels in the soil are adequate'. Calcium moves to the fruit dissolved in water, so when watering is uneven the delivery stops even though the supply is there. Fixing the watering fixes the calcium.

Can the tomato with the brown bottom still be saved or eaten?

The affected tissue will not recover — it is dead and stays dead, dry and leathery rather than rotting. The rest of the fruit is not dangerous, so cutting the bad end off and using the rest is fine if the fruit is otherwise sound. Everything you change now is for fruit that has not set yet.

I water a lot and still get blossom end rot — why?

Because too much water causes it too. NC State: 'either an inadequate or excess moisture stress favors blossom-end rot development'. The target is steady rather than plentiful — a plant that is soaked, then dries, then is soaked again suffers the same interrupted calcium delivery as one that is simply too dry. Mulch and a slow, regular supply do more than volume does. Damaged roots from hoeing close to the plant produce the same effect.
